Day 1 Analysis: Barrett SCOTUS Hearing

Kuting Feng
GianCarlo Canaparo from The Heritage Foundation and Roge Pilon from the Cato Institute gave their takes on the first day of Amy Coney Barrett's senate confirmation hearings. Canaparo said critics point to the time when Barrett wrote a law review article where she disagreed with the Chief Justice's reasoning to uphold the Affordable Care Act. But Canaparo says the case that will be brought to the Supreme Court on November 10 does not deal with the same issues. As a result, it doesn't make sense to say that we know Barrett will overturn Obamacare, should she be appointed to the Court. Roger Pilon from the Cato Institute said that it is very unlikely that Obamacare would be overturned for technical reasons. He claimed that as the election is nearing, Democrat's emphasis on the Affordable Care Act is a political tactic to appeal to voters' emotions. Canaparo said discussing policies distracted the hearings from focusing on what makes a good judge, and if Amy ConeyBarrett is a good judge who respects democracy. He said this should be the core of these hearings.
