Wuhan Resident Ridicules China’s ‘Positive Energy’ Propaganda

“Positive energy” became a catchphrase in China in 2012 and has since appeared frequently in China’s state propaganda. Dissidents in China are often criticized for spreading “negative energy” and failing to look at the “positive side” of society. During the CCP virus pandemic, “positive energy” propaganda has been taken to an extreme. For instance, when Fang Fang, a female writer, and resident of Wuhan, published her diary online during the city-wide lockdown, many internet trolls attacked her for recording the tragedies of Wuhan citizens. They even challenged her, saying, “Did you see those deaths with your own eyes? How dare you to write hearsay as true stories?” Ms. Zhang Zhan, a dissident and former attorney, living in Shanghai, has been trying to investigate and report on the real situation in Wuhan as a citizen journalist. The following is a conversation between Zhang and a Wuhan resident who ridiculed the CCP’s positive energy propaganda.
