China Protests a 'Watershed Moment’ of Awakening: Xi Van Fleet

China is reportedly set to ease COVID-19 restrictions, with several cities rolling back some measures. The country’s top official on COVID, Vice Premier Sun Chunlan, adopted a softer approach to virus prevention, citing a weakening omicron variant, as well as more vaccinations and experience. The announcement follows protests brought on by anger over the strict zero-COVID policy, which the official did not mention in her comments. NTD spoke to Xi Van Fleet, a survivor of Mao's Cultural Revolution, for analysis. Van Fleet said that the Chinese are fighting for their most basic human rights and that they have been pushed to the breaking point with people starving and dying in their homes. Van Fleet called this a 'watershed moment' in which the Chinese people are waking up to the perils of the regime.
