Chancellor of the Exchequer Jeremy Hunt told MPs he was having to make difficult decisions to ensure a “shallower downturn” as the economy enters a recession. The autumn budget he laid out numerous tax hikes, which, alongside spending cuts, will generate around 55 billion pounds to pay off UK debt. His economic agenda is a stark contrast to the plans of his two predecessors, who won their campaigns on promises not to raise taxes.
