Gene-Editing Bill Sparks Animal Welfare Fears

Plans to relax rules around gene editing plants and livestock in England cleared the Commons Monday night. But these are complex procedures, and there are varied views on the difference between gene editing and genetic modification. Modification involves inserting genes from another species, while gene editing involves taking parts of the DNA out. While ministers say the plans will help improve food security, critics have warned of unintended consequences. The bill will now go to the Lords for further scrutiny. NTD spoke to Peter Stevenson, chief policy adviser of Compassion in World Farming, about what it could mean for animal welfare.
