State Dept: Gang Violence, Situation in Haiti 'Untenable'

State Department Principal Deputy Spokesperson: Vedant Patel labeled the security situation in Haiti 'untenable' at a Monday press briefing in Washington, adding the Biden Administration is evaluating potential ways to help Americans get out of the Caribbean nation. "It is not hyperbole to say that this is one of the most dire humanitarian situations in the world," said Patel. "Gang violence continues to make the security situation in Haiti untenable, and it is a region that demands our attention and action." A charter flight carrying dozens of U.S. citizens fleeing spiraling gang violence in Haiti landed Sunday in Miami, U.S. State Department officials said. More than 30 U.S. citizens were on the government-chartered flight, officials said in a statement. It arrived in the Miami International Airport after the U.S. Embassy in Port-au-Prince earlier this month urged U.S. citizens to leave “as soon as possible” as chaos gripped the Caribbean nation.
